After years of Union dominating the Oregon single-school picture, there's a new champion in town, as the Portland Pumas defeated Newberg 34-10 in this past weekend's final to take the state championship.
Newberg defeated Union 24-14 May 13 to make the final, while Portland defeated Battle Ground 31-10.
What's happening around the country in Boys HS Rugby? Time for a nationwide rundown:
Two of the best single-school high school teams in Oregon met up this weekend, with defending champs Union holding off Newberg 32-31.
While it was a bit of a relief for Union to pull out the victory, it wasn't easy, and the result also shows that Newberg is a team to watch.
It's early days in the Rugby Oregon girls HS competition but already three teams have risen to the top.
Linn Benton is 2-0 after beating Canby 47-12 this past weekend. Grant is 2-0 now after shutting out both North Clackamas and Cleveland. The Lady Barbarians are also 2-0 after taking care of North Clackamas.
Union HS out of Oregon moved to 2-0 in Rugby Oregon action with a 51-19 defeat of Prairie Saturday.
This follows on from 32-0 shutout of Lincoln in the league opener last week. Union was paced last week by sophomore prop Joshua Barber, who scored three tries and was player of the game. The Union forwards looked solid throughout.
