Charlotte Catholic won the North Carolina single-school boys HS rugby championship this weekend with an emphatic 55-17 defeat of rivals North Meck.
Led by the play of wing Jonah Lamothe, who scored two tries and played solid defense, and with hooker Matthew Notorangelo having a big day running with the ball and on defense, Charlotte Catholic ran away with the championship.
The North Mecklenburg HS rugby team, which is slated to play in the North Carolina single-school state final this Saturday, was hit with a tragedy Tuesday when 17-year-old junior Marcos Hernandez reportedly drowned in a local lake.

North Meck and Charlotte Catholic will face off for the North Carolina single-school title Saturday after both won their semifinals.
Charlotte Catholic defeated Myers Park 59-0 last week, and North Meck edged Hough 17-13.
The Raleigh Rattlesnakes defeated the Charlotte Tigers 33-5 to win the North Carolina high school club title.
With a 39-10 victory over Phillip O. Berry Academy Monday night, North Mecklenburg secured the #2 seed in the North Carolina single-school playoffs, behind Charlotte Catholic.
“We focused on disciplined attack and defense during recent practice sessions and it paid off,” said Head Coach Brent Pasko, who is also a teacher at the school.
