Where the pecking order stands in Florida's high school league could be a bit clearer after this weekend.
First off, let's look at the standings:
Jacksonville opened up the Florida HS season with an impressive 15-5 win over the Naples Hammerheads Saturday in what is a tight league in the Sunshine State.
Teams from all over the Southeast will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. May 22-23 for a series of cross-border games.
The Florida Invitational Rugby Showcase will feature 15s games all weekend. The Charlotte Tigers, Raleigh Redhawks, Florida Jaguars, Wellington Wizards, and Jacksonville Wolverines will be there, with some of those clubs fielding younger-level teams as well.
We're down to four boys HS teams in Florida after this past weekend's quarterfinals and the quarters bore out what coaches have been saying—this is a very competitive league.
It remains very tight in Florida's high school league after this week's action.
Key Biscayne got a bit of a surprise at Wellington. Cardinal Gibbons stepped into the fray. (We had Gibbons winning their opener but that was an error based on reporting from other sources—Okapi won that game 28-10). And Jacksonville returned to winning ways.
