GRR: Florida Youth Rugby
It's a busy weekend around the country in Boys HS rugby, as some leagues are getting started, and others heading into playoff-decision time; here's a look:
St. Thomas Aquinas won 26-17 over Cardinal Gibbons this past weekend in Florida, cementing the team’s position as the DII Boys HS team in the state.
When the Florida Youth Rugby Boys DI league merged all of its pools to form on conference, the conventional wisdom was that the season would make going undefeated very difficult - travel, injury issues, and various other distractions would all have an influence - and in fact that wisdom was correct.
The Tampa Krewe sit all alone atop the Florida Youth Rugby Boys DI HS league after edging the previously-unbeaten Jupiter Sharks 17-14 on Saturday.
The game was an exciting one, with two evenly-matched teams, and it all came down to a late penalty attempt for the Krewe.
The Okapi Wanderers defeated West Pines 16-6 to move to 2-1 in Florida’s Boys DI HS league in the only league game held this past weekend.
It was yet another solid result for the Wanderers in their first full season in varsity-level HS rugby. Okapi played a JV schedule last year as the program has concentrated on growing from the younger ages on up.
