Cal defeated the United States Naval Academy 57-15 Saturday in the Varsity Cup semifinals to book the Bears’ third-straight spot in the Varsity Cup final.

Cal improved to 17-1, with a solid performance in their final home game over a tough Navy side.

Washington State is onto the next round of Pacific Mountain Rugby Conference playoffs, having defeated Cal 37-22 today in Palo Alto, Calif. The win is essentially a berth into the spring Round of 16 and Sunday’s game against Stanford will determine where the Cougars fall in the lineup.

The PAC Rugby Conference finds out what’s what this weekend, with the 1-0 Utah Utes traveling to 3-0 Cal, and the 1-2 UCLA Bruins making the trek to Tucson to face 0-2 Arizona.

Not even Stanford, the perennial league champion, has been exempt from near-losses and could easily be 2-2 right now instead of 4-0. But when the ball bounces in one team’s direction, it bounces away from another, and that’s where Cal has found itself.
