Who Is Stalking the Perennials in the MAC?

Who Is Stalking the Perennials in the MAC?

Pretty much every year in the Mid-American Conference has seen the same teams compete for the championship.

Bowling Green is in the hunt every year, and wins almost every year. But they have been pushed, with Louisville interrupting BGSU’s 40-year run of conference titles with championship wins in 2022 and 2023.

Bowling Green pulled it back last year in a one-point comeback thriller.

But could we see something different this year?

BGSU’s recruiting has been strong and while they are drawing heavily from Ohio, that’s a state with a lot of good high school rugby players. The Falcons know they will need to work hard for it, and Louisville, after an astonishing three-year run, they still have some players who have been central to their efforts. They lost some experience in their tight five but have some talent coming through.

Who else?

Keep an eye on Dayton, which has a chance to take a step forward, even with a Week 1 opener against those self-same Louisville Cardinals.

Cincinnati and Western Michigan have often been tenaciously close to the top, and they could be again this year.

“We’re very excited for the upcoming season,” said University of Cincinnati Head Coach Kyle Roche. “We’re returning a very strong group, especially in the forwards.”

All but one of their starting forward pack that lost in the semis to Bowling Green return, with John Reddy having enjoyed a strong 2024 season. And all-conference prop Andrew McGlaughlin is back after a semester away on a co-op career-building program. His presence will be huge.

“The biggest opportunity for new faces into the first side will be in the backline,” added Roche. “We graduated five seniors, including our starting centers.”

Fullback Ja’mez Early stepped up last season and his emergence as a player and a leader has led him to being chosen as captain. He will be leading a team that is seeking out challenges. They have scheduled Kentucky and Thomas More out-of-conference but it’s going to be tough, with Bowling Green their opening opponent on September 6.

Western Michigan Head Coach Sanders Slevatz is working with a team that was very young last year, but is back (no seniors in 2024) with more experience.

“More than half our 1st XV each week was a mix of sophomores and freshmen,” said Slevatz. “We return with 100% of our roster from last season intact, with the addition of an exciting and athletic group of freshman, transfers, and new recruits.”

They have playing continuity and leadership continuity. Vice-Captain Nolan Van Loo is a strong leader on and off the pitch.

“He takes care of a lot of the club’s behind-the-scenes duties and is a vital part of our system on the pitch,” said Slevatz. “Nolan is set to graduate with a degree in Engineering and will be joining the Naval Academy next year.”

Captain Adain Wardell is an NCR All American and is a hard-working player who is physically and mentally powerful. With Dr. Mark Allen still overseeing things and former Eagle Ata Malifa on the coaching staff, things are looking good for WMU in 2025.

“We have spent years working on building a strong rugby culture here at Western Michigan University Bronco Rugby, emphasizing honor, accountability, and integrity, as men, community members, family members, and rugby players,” said Slevatz. “We have built the program on hard work and humility. Now, we need to turn those values into wins when the trophies are on the line.”
