USA Women Name Side to Take on Fiji
USA Women's 15s Head Coach Sione Fukofuka has named his side to face Fiji on Saturday.
After naming his World Cup squad for the upcoming WRWC, Fukofuka is putting in a side that both settles some combinations and also tests some players he needs to see under pressure.
"Obviously the Pacific Four was a disappointment and we've spent the last 10 to 12 days at Mount St. Mary's putting in our own fixes to some of the issues," said the coach.
Some of the fixes are related to discipline. They gave up way too many penalties in their loss to Australia, and many of those penalties were holding-on penalties. But there were other issues in the breakdown, too. The Eagles brought in referee consultant Alain Roland to help the team understand where they were falling short there, and should bring dividends.
It's mostly about decision-making, said captain Kate Zackary.
"We need to be a bit more fierce getting to the breakdown but we're also looking for continuity, so we need to be ready for that offload but also in a position to adjust—you need to be in two minds," said Zackary.
Penalties killed the USA effort against Australia and, to a lesser extent, Canada. One penalty would be followed by another and another, and a prime attacking position would become an attacking position for the opposition.
"A lot of the pressure we were under ... we put ourselves under pressure," said Fukofuka.
Meanwhile, the team has also worked hard around their kicking, looking at not only how to execute kicks but when to kick and why. Against Fiji their kick-chase will have to be very good because the Fijian deep three are very elusive and counter well. Meanwhile, up front they have power and size and will provide a good test to a solid USA scrum.
"Fiji are an exciting team that plays with unpredictability and physicality," added Fukofuka. "They have a game style that centers around their scrum and a strong forward pack who like to be direct. We are excited to take this challenge on and show our strengths within our pack and unleash our backline.
"We have come into camp with a clear understanding of what we needed to improve from our previous performances and have worked hard to make those changes. We have a strong team first mentality where our individual performance is focused on earning a team result. The team has been working hard on our detail, our accuracy and our execution across 80 minutes and is excited to showcase this against Fiji this Saturday."
Young wing Erica Coulibaly is back and hopefully will have some space to run. The center pairing of Alev Kelter and Ilona Maher could be very dangerous. But much will fall on the shoulders of the back row of Zackary, Rachel Johnson, and Tahlia Brody to ensure those holding-on penalties don't happen too often.
USA kicks off vs Fiji 2PM ET at Audi Field in DC in what is reportedly a sold-out doubleheader (the USA men play England later in the day). The game is live on CBS and Paramoutn+.
