San Diego State Men's Rugby Seeks Coach

San Diego State Men's Rugby Seeks Coach

San Diego State Rugby is nearing its 70th Anniversary.

San Diego State University is looking for a new Head Coach for Men's Rugby.

Ryan Matyas, who was Head Coach last season, has had to step away due to family commitments, however he is remaining with the program to assist with the coaching transition. The remains a solid group of assistants, Matyas told GRR, however they aren't able to lead the team due to a variety of commitments, as well.

Last year Matyas oversaw the first step in a road to improvement for the Aztecs. In 2024-25 100% of player dues were paid, which is an important milestone, and they developed a committed, goal-aligned player group that found significant improvement on the field.

The Head Coach will be paid a part-time stipend and will operate under the supervision of the Competitive Sports Coordinator at SDSU. The Head Coach's job will be to coordinate operations for 15s and 7s, including practice planning, game-day coaching, and development for the individual players and the team as a whole.

The current coaching staff is ready and able to stay on as needed, but the new Head Coach might well want others to assist, as well.

There are more details on the application page, which you can find here>>

San Diego State is a D1A program that plays in the California Conference. Last year, despite some early losses, the Aztecs finished strong and went 3-4, 5th in a nine-team league.
