Rugby Virginia Welcomes Over 25 Teams for Championship Weekend

Richmond eyes a state title.

Rugby Virginia will hold its playoffs this coming weekend at Culpeper Sports Complex in Culpeper, Va., with at least 25 teams in action throughout the day.

"We're excited to return to Culpeper again this year to stage our tournament finals," said Stuart Willis, Managing Director for Rugby Virginia. "Last year's tournament at the Culpeper Sports Complex was a fantastic success! The facilities are first rate, we had a great turnout supporting the kids and the Culpeper staff were great to work with."

On the youth and high school level, participation levels are rebounding after COVID put a damper on competition.

"More than 25 teams will be coming to Culpeper on May 14 to play for seven different championship levels," Willis continued. "We'd love to have as many fans as possible enjoying the competition. Rugby is a great game that has a position for everyone, no matter your size, with co-ed teams playing at the younger levels of competition. It's a friendly community that loves introducing rugby to newbies, so you don't worry if you need help understanding the rules. There are plenty of us eager to share our love for the game."

GRR #17 Fort Hunt will play #20 Richmond in the boys final, the Cardinal Cup. The matchup for the girls final has not been confirmed, but it will be played there as well.

West End will compete for the Dogwood Cup at the U19 level against either Winchester or Loudoun/Western Loudoun. Those two teams play Monday.

The Old Dominion final, which is a U17 competition, will also see Richmond vs Fort Hunt in the final. Loudoun plays Vienna for 3rd.
