City Honors In Control In Winning WNY Girls HS Title

City Honors rode a dominat defense to their championship.

City Honors won the Western New York Girls HS championship this past weekend, rolling over a very solid Orchard Park team 52-12.

It was an impressive showing from the Buffalo school team, and made all the more impressive in that they had to rebound from an early 7-0 deficit. That score came when captain Bella O’Hara got shown a yellow card. But having given up that try, City Honors returned the favor, with Lexi Erdolino punching it in from short range and Felicia Toomey hitting the conversion to tie the game at 7-7.

While still a player down, Honors saw senior Noah Baldon score on a strong pick-and-go. Then, back at full strength, City Honors scored twice more with another try by junior Erdolino and one from junior center Kaori Segars. Toomey converted those tries to make it 26-7 halftime.

In the second half Kaori started the scoring with a long run in which she evaded several tacklers. Fullback Daniyah Green then went the length of the field to make it 40-7 before Orchard Park got their second try.

City Honors had an answer, however, with wing Shay Ward and then the skipper, O’Hara, added tries to make the final score 52-12.

Senior captains Bella O'Hara, Shahzoda Nasimjonova, and Ava Dimitroff led the team well all year and especially on finals day. City Honors rode an excellent defense through the season. They gave up only 50 points in six games, and 26 of those came in a game where they had already wrapped up a spot in the final. Outside of that game, City Honors was averaging less than five points per game.

Juniors Kaori Segars, Felicia Toomey, and Lexi Erdolino led the team in scoring and were major contributors in other aspects. Players such as O'Hara, Green, Segars, and Erdolino have been tapped by top college programs or the USA Pathways system.
