The USA is into the Cup Quarterfinals in the Hong Kong 7s after crushing Wales 40-12 in the second game of pool play.

The Eagles got three tries from Zack Test, who was ably assisted by some impressive offloads and support runners from his teammates. Madison Hughes scored two tries in the first half and converted four. The USA actually started the game down a man as Carlin Isles was yellow-carded early for pulling on an opponent's jersey as the two chased a kick. While Isles was on the sideline the Eagles defended well,a dn Test forced a holding-on penalty that led to a USA attack. The Eagles worked the ball nicely and then Danny Barrett protected the movement by smacking the ball over his head to Huges, who scampered in for a try.

Isles came back on the field the wing was covered well, but he danced around and drew all sorts of attention. Isles fed Test for a big run for the USA's second try, and then some excellent work in the rucks and a little back-and-forth from Isles led to a break from Barrett, and an offload to Hughes.

Up 21-0, the USA saw Wales inch back into the game. The Welsh used a direct vertical attack to score before halftime, and then they retained the kickoff in the second half to score again.

At 21-12, the USA replied. They won the restart, and Maka Unufe burst away for about 80 meters. He was caught just before the line, but Perry Baker was there in support and Unufe passed when he needed to. 28-12. A long pass from Hughes out to the wing set up Test for a race to the corner, and then a nice dummy and run from Folau Niua set up another setup for Test.

The USA played very well, especially in the rucks where they were very quick to release the ballcarrier and work the poach. Their passing was soft and accurate and that allowed them to keep the ball moving.

It was a pretty performance, and also a chance for some of the less-used players to get some time on the field. Matai Lauta made his USA debut in the game, and his key play was to move his left leg forward in a scrum that ensured the ball went behind him, and thus Hughes could pass the ball out. That led to a try.

The Eagles are now 2-0 in their pool, and face England, also 2-0. Regardless of the result of that game, the USA is into the top eight for the fourth straight tournament.
