Tropical 7s Canceled

The 2020 Tropical 7s event, slated for Orlando, Fla. April 10-11, has been canceled.

Following on with other cancelations throughout the country due to the COVID19 outbreak, this very large tournament needed teams to be notified, and it took some extra time to communicate with the 100s of teams involved.

Teams received an update on March 6, with the North American High School 7s Series closely involved in the discussion. At that time, like many competitions, the tournament took a wait and see approach. But this week, news of the increased spread of the virus, and with schools and regional and national government travel restrictions, it became clear that  the tournament could not go forward.

“Our primary responsibility has to be the health and safety of all participants—players, volunteers, suppliers, employees and everyone involved with the event,” said Tropical 7s Director John Siner. “We are very disappointed that the tournament will not go ahead but hosting the tournament would pose a significant public health risk to attendees and their families both here in Orlando and potentially the extended community.”

"The NAHS7s takes the health and welfare of our players very seriously, particularly in light of the fact our organizations and teams come from all over the US and Canada," added Michael Cressler, NAHS7s director. "We support John Siner and the Tropical 7s in the difficult decision to cancel the stop taking into considerations the health and welfare of all."

There is a possibility that the NAHS 7s will move its 1st stop to another tournament should that be feasible. But right now, there's reallyno rugby for the next month or so, and it is quite possible travel bans will be extended.
