Tight Games and Upsets as Final 16 in Men's D2 College Set

Miami kept up the attack in the cold.

The Play-in games are done and the full Round of 16 in Men's D2 college rugby is set.

Surprises? Maybe just a few.

Nov 12-13 Men's D2 College Scores

Miami of Ohio beat Grand Valley State 34-5 behind a blistering attack and loose forward Matt Fry powering through.

Grand Valley State hit into a wall of injuries just at the wrong time and saw one of their dangerous players, fullback Drew O'Connor, get injured in the first two minutes of the game. But, having said all that, GVSU Head Coach John Mullett made no excused. "We would not have won at ful; strength; the right team is advancing."

It was bitterly cold and snowy and that made it difficult for both teams to unleash their attack the way they wanted.

"It was less a rugby match and more a battle for survival," said Miami's Wesley Seay. "The game came down to winning set pieces, tough defense, and using kicks to win the field position battle, and we were able to have success in all three areas."

The Miami forwards were tough and disciplined. Captaina and flyhalf Chris Mathews adjusted well to the weather and tightened up the passing to ensure they could move the ball.

Flankner Jackson Noe let the defensive effort and was repeatedly up in the GVSU players' faces. Prop Zach Fidishun anchored the scrum, was a key lifter in the lineouts, and made several big runs, setting up teammates and also scoring a try.

NC State hammered UNC-Charlotte to win the Southern Conference and make UNC-C the #2 seed.

Mira Costa College beat Montana State 22-15. Mira Costa had played three games against D1-level West Coast and Western teams in which they performed well and also were tested against physically powerful teams. This gave MCC exactly the sort of test to prepare them for MSU.

Auburn beat Memphis 36-12 to win the SCRC and

Loyola has gone from strength to strength through the season and their 68-0 shutout of Washington University was yet another step in that direction.

There were two very close games in the play-ins. Virginia edged Villanova 33-31. In the final segment of the game Villanova got a red card, and then two yellows. They played 12-on-15 at the end of the game and Virginia was able to close it out without too much trouble.

The Marist vs Coast Guard game was back and forth. The teams were tied 6-6 and later 16-16. Marist kicked a penalty, Coast Guard scored an unconverted try, and Marist added another penalty and it was now 22-21. Coast Guars scored another try to go up six, but a penalty try (no-wrap tackle as the ballcarrier was crossing the tryline) nudged Marist ahead now 29-28 with four minutes to go.

Coast Guard got a penalty deep inside Marist territory and, after some deliberation, opted to kick for posts—a try was harder to get but would have put Coast Guard up four points. They slotted the kick, but Marist came back with a high ball, a good chase, and eventually a penalty which Federico Gubana slotted. Marist ran out the clock from there to win 32-31. Gubana was named player of the game.
