South Greenville, Wando Win in SC

Grant Weston had a big day for South Greenville.

It will be ,as expected, Wando v South Greenville in the South Carolina championship game this coming weekend.

Wando handled Greenville HS in fairly impressive fashion, running out to a 21-0 lead and cruising to a 33-10 victory.

South Greenville defeated Irmo 27-7 in the other semi.

"Irmo is massive," said South Greenville Coach Phil Weston. "They are strong and tough, but our guys hung in there."

Once the South Greenville forwards got the ball working through the phases, Irmo's backline defensive line started to fracture a little, and space opened up for the backs.

Flyhalf Grant Weston cut through for three tries while center Austin Burton scored one and fullback Jonathan LaFoy-Vance scored another - LaFoy-Vance's was a wild one, as he fielded a kickoff in-goal and raced the distance to score.

It was an emotional game for everyone at South Greenville, as this was their first game since the death of assistant coach Mike Cobb. Cobb, who worked for USA Rugby as a referee evaluator, played with and coached with Weston, and helped him start the South Greenville program. Cobb was killed while on a referee exchange in Thailand, when he was stuck by a car.

"He'll be missed," said Weston. "It was a big loss for us."

For Wando, wing Chris Tuchbarber, flyhalf Kane Waterbury, and outside center Jon Cummins ran in tries in the opening nine minutes, while flankers Robert Gardner and Adam Larson were creating turnovers in the breakdown.

Greenville HS relied on their heavily forwards and attacked the interior channels, but the forwards, especially sophomore Author Doyle, who led the team in tackles. Owen McNulty came off the bench and was a solid addition in the second half, while senior Kane Waterbury had an excellent game at flyhalf.

Greenville HS did score two tries to make it 21-10, but in the final five minutes, tcrumhalf Charlie van Vliet and No. 8 Joe Schmidt scored late in the game to put it away.

"It was a closer game than the scoreline indicates," said Wando Coach Tod Shepherd. "We will have to play better if we hope to win the state final against a powerful South Greenville team that appears to be hitting on all cylinders."
