Playoff Time!

Charlotte Tigers on defense. They did enough to advance in the North Carolina club playoffs.

It’s a big championship weekend around Boys HS rugby, as some playoffs begin, and some end.

South Doyle faces off with Ravenwood in the Tennessee state final at Middle Tennessee State University. Ravenwood hammered Christian Brothers in the semis, with scrumhalf Jeffrey Rein - off to Furman University in the fall - scoring fire tries, and No. 8 JB Williams (another future Furman freshman) leading the defensive effort.

South Doyle has been constantly strong all season, bolstered by players from a 12-1 football program (or perhaps the 12-1 football program was bolstered by the rugby team). This will be a huge clash.

In South Carolina Wando faces South Greenville in the final. Both won big in their previous playoff rounds - Wando outscoring opponents 93-0 in the quarters and semis combined, and South Greenville outscoring opponents 123-3. See more here.

North Carolina also has its club final, with the Charlotte Tigers having rebounded from a couple of early-season losses to make the championship game against undefeated Raleigh at the Raleigh Rugby Club home field.

While the Rattlesnakes have run the table this year, the Tigers have hit their stride at the right time and could be poised to pull off an upset. See more here.

Meanwhile, the single-school playoffs begin. Hough has already advanced past Northern Guilford, and we're waiting for the other play-in between Myers Park (5-3) and Providence (5-3). Hough is set to face North Meck, while the winner of the other game faces Charlotte Catholic.

In the DC area, the MAVRC final will be #1-ranked single-school team Gonzaga, and #12 Georgetown. While Georgetown Prep has been something of a revelation this year, Gonzaga is heavily favored. (See more)

In Illinois, Brother Rice, undefeated in Catholic Conference play, faces 3-1-1 Mt. Carmel in the championship game. Brother Rice, led by some snappy back play from Jack Desmond and Matt Pikowski, will want to rebound after a tough Midwest tournament.

Colorado crowns two champions this weekend at Infinity Park. Fort Collins plays the Titans in the DII final, while East takes on Regis Jesuit in the DI final. Colorado Springs plays PAC for 3rd in DI. See more here.

In Kansas, the Kansas City Cougars play St. Thomas Aquinas in a rematch of a game won by the Cougars 20-15 in April. This is for the state championship.

Meanwhile, in Missouri, one of the chief rivals to the Cougars and Aquinas are the KC Jr. Blues. They head up an eight-team Missouri playoff in St. Louis, where East Missouri favorites St. Louis University High hopes to unseat the Blues.

The Oregon multi-school club semis kick off with Beaverton playing Ben and Eastside playing Linn-Benton. See preview.

The Utah semis and final play Friday and Saturday in both single-school (see preview), and multi-school (see preview). Seven of the eight teams involved are ranked by Goff Rugby Report. A good showing by Orem could make it eight out of eight.

Rugby Washington opens up their playoffs with the semifinals this weekend. Liberty takes on Eastside, while Budd Bay plays Kent in a classic rivalry game. Liberty has pretty much had its way over the rest of the teams in the league, except Budd Bay. Meanwhile, Budd Bay and Kent, bitter rivals since Budd Bay started playing in 2000, played two very close games this season. (See Preview.)

Rugby Idaho got their first round of payoffs done, with the top two teams getting a bye. Now it's Capital HS against North Idaho in a game where North Idaho is the higher seed, but Capital may well be the better team. And defending state champion Mountain View plays Rocky Mountain Friday evening. See more here.
