Overseas Americans - Scully, Manoa, Fry get Starts

USA back Blaine Scully gets his Cardiff Blues debut Saturday as he starts at right wing for the Pro 12 club in Wales.

You won’t see Cam Dolan on the squad as he tweaked his hamstring in his debut for the club, so it’s just one American lining up against Zebre.

Also in the Pro 12, AJ MacGinty is not yet in the lineup for Connacht. However, USA lock Greg Peterson makes his first start for Glasgow Warriors, the club that contribute the most players to the Rugby World Cup. The Warriors take on the Ospreys.

In the Aviva Premiership, Chris Wules and Titi Lamositele are on the bench for Saracens against the team Sarries will play in March in New Jersey, London Irish. Hayden Smith won’t be used, but it seems now that Lamositele could be a regular name on the lineup sheet.

Two USA players are in the Newcastle Falcons game day roster. Eric Fry starts at loosehead prop, while Todd Clever is on the bench at loose forward against Exeter.

In France, Samu Manoa will start for Toulon against Genoble.

Nick Civetta has signed with I Medicei of Florence in Italy’s Serie A. Having gotten his European passport, he is now in a position of not being one of the foreign players on a club. Club president Giacomo Lucibello said he wanted to sign hard workers, not prima donnas, and said that the 6-9 Notre Dame/Cal product Civetta was the kind of player he wanted.

“He is a class player,” Lucibello said in Italian, “but also experienced. [He] graduated from Berkeley in geotechnical engineering. He may be the model of the player we want; a fighter in the field, but with his head on his shoulders.”
