Mira Mesa Numbers Look Good

It’s all in the numbers for Mira Mesa HS as the Marauders are now 4-0.

Mira Mesa logged two impressive scrimmage wins over Westview HS and Patrick Henry, and followed that up with  with a 33-19 win over Coronado and then, this past weekend, a 54-24 defeat of High Tech High.

For Head Coach Bob McFadyen, the nice start is all about depth.

‘One of the biggest things we’ve struggled with in our first three years has been numbers,” said McFadyen. “So at the end of last season I challenged the returning players to being a friend, a new player. That really helped.”

With a squad of 27 players, who are all coming to training consistently, Mira Mesa is putting it together. The forward pack and the backline is a nice mix of returning players - many of which have played since middle school - and new players, allowing the Marauders to get both units up to speed quickly.

“We’ve had a lot of kids come through the U14 system and they’ve had some good coaching,” said McFadyen. “We’ve got a good mix of experience and new.”

Leading the way is the halfback combination of Dorian Cardenas and JP Narciso. Cardenas used to be a wing but has been moved to scrumhalf and is very smart around the breakdowns.

The team as a whole is not full of big players. The school is heavily populated with kids from of Philippine, Guamanian, and Hispanic descent. They are not especially big, but McFadyen said the players are used to it.

“They have developed an aggressiveness that makes them not intimidated by size,” he said.

In fact, with the results coming in, maybe it’s the other teams that should worry.

Mira Mesa leads the SoCal Varsity White San Diego South division with a 2-0 league record. Also 2-0 in University City, which beat Patrick Henry on Saturday. Westview improved to 1-1 with a win over the Norsemen (now 0-2), while Coronado’s 27-12 win over La Jolla also put them at 1-1. Patrick Henry’s loss drops them to 1-1 after a December 9 victory over the Norsemen. La Jolla sits at 0-2 now, while High Tech High is also 1-1 after their loss to Mira Mesa.
