Keystone - Wolfer Sparks Joe's

Noah Niu scored for SJU.

St. Joseph's and Rutgers both clinched 1st place in their respective divisions in the Keystone Conference this weekend, as both recorded two-point victories.

Rutgers edged Temple 12-10 to finish the regular season 3-0. After falling behind 5-0 Rutgers tied it up with a try from Glen Johnson and then followed it up with a try from Jamil Pollard. Mike Nezgoda's conversion was the difference.

Meanwhile, conversion kicking was the difference for St. Joe's over Pitt. In an exciting game, the Hawks held off the Panthers thanks in part to a superb game from flyhalf and goalkicker Jimmy Wolfer. St. Joe's took an early lead from a lineout-and-maul. Then Noa Niu zipped over for the team's second try - Wolfer converted bth and SJU led 14-5 at halftime.

Pitt prop Chris Johnson powered over for Pitt's try just before the break.

In the second half, Wolfer took over, scoring two impressive tries, and slotting the difficult conversions. The first try made it 21-5 before Tom Brunt scored for Pittsburgh. Christian Quiros hit the conversion to make it 21-12. Then Michael Dunleavy broke through for Pitt and with the Quiros conversion, SJU's lead was only 21-19. But once again Wolfer was able to get over, and hit the touchline conversion for the 28-19 lead. Flanker Noble Smith got Pitt closer, and Quiros hit the kick, but the game ended 28-26.

"I wasn't worried, I trusted the guys," said St. Joseph's Coach Dan Yarusso. "Obviously Jimmy kicking those conversions was big for us."

The game was moved from its original venue due to rain, but it didn't seem to faze the visitors as St. Joe's started the stronger.

Pitt Coach Allan Murray said he was pleased to see his team bounce back, but they came up short.

"We look forward to the challenge ahead to try and face them in the Keystone Championship final," said Murray.

Meanwhile, the man of the day had to be Wolfer, who scored two excellent tries, ran the offense well, and did the kicking. He put in a clutch performance at a key moment.

All eight teams are still in it as the conference plays quarterfinals next week and then a semifinal-final weekend October 29-30. (West Chester beat Villanova to clinch 2nd in the East.)
