Isles to Miss Vancouver to Run

Isles is fast on the rugby field, but is that fast enough on the track? David Barpal photo.

USA 7s team wing Carlin Isles will not be with the team in Vancouver, because he is hoping to qualify for the USA Track and Field team as a sprinter and become a double Olympian.

Isles has announced that he will compete in the 60 meter spring in the National Indoor Track Championships in Portland, Ore. this weekend. If Isles, who whose fastest 100 meters is good enough to meet the Olympic qualification standard (which doesn't guarantee qualification, just means you aren't summarily told "no"), does qualify, he will join Morris Kirksey, who competed in rugby and track in the 1920 summer games.

Kirksey won silver in the 100 meters and gold in the 4x100 relay, and also won gold in rugby for the USA. there are approximately 81 athletes who have won medals in more than one Olympic discipline, with swimming and water polo being the most common combination.

(As far as we can tell, the only athletes to win gold in two disciplines at the same Olympic Summer Games are Kirksey, German Carl Schuhmann in 1896, British swimmer/water polo player John Jarvis in 1900, and US swimmer/water polo players Joe Ruddy and Lou Handley in 1904.

Isles has reportedly been given permission to miss Vancouver for the event. Isles won't garner an Olympic place with his performance in Portland - it is more a competition jump-starter for him as he looks to this summer's qualification meet.
