Iowa Central Beats Cyclones in Closer

Tritons return to winning ways.

Iowa Central Community College Playing for the final time this season, and took care of in-state rivals Iowa State 64-8.

The two programs also played a B-side match, which the Tritons won 53-10, and a 7s match, also won by Iowa CCC, 21-19.

It has been a strange, up-and-down year for Iowa Central, but an important one as the Tritons as they managed to get more games in than most, and showed they can compete.

"While it was really nice to get the wins, I was more proud of the six young men who we introduced between matches as graduates," Head Coach Brent Nelson told Iowa CCC's press. "They have stuck with it this year, finished out their degrees and will walk out of here with bright, bright futures.

"That was the proudest moment for me."

In the A-side game Dakota Southworth, Herbert Evans, and Hugo Minnaar all scored a brace of tries while Philip Woodhouse, Gus Sokol, Tavius Sykora-Matthess, and Clifton Patterson each scored one. Harrison Dalton added six conversions and Aiden Farrell one.

"Iowa State is a nice club program with great numbers and a coach that is very passionate about the sport," Nelson said. "They are a proper team. They had wrapped up their 15s season but were able to put together a team to come and play us to prepare their 7s team for nationals."

As for Iowa State, Head Coach Anthony Frein has marshaled his team through a tough season, garnering some impressive results, including in mixed 15s-and-7s weekends. But this was a different level.

"We got stomped by ICCC this weekend," said Frein. "The young guys were not ready for them."
