Interesting Slew of Winners in CRC Women's Tournaments
Brown University came away with the Women's Premier CRC title for the third time in a row this past weekend.
The Bears beat Adrian 38-0, Navy 24-7, Penn State 19-7, and, in the final, Army 19-7.
In the final, Army broke through for a try early, but Brown clamped down on defense, and two Laryssa Barbosa tries, converted by Julia Murray, staked Brown to a 14-7 lead. As Army worked to try to tie it up, Akilah Cathey iced it for Brown.
"We could not be more proud of our whole squad, led by three amazing seniors, Aziza Alford, Akilah Cathey, and Nikki Lynch," said Brown head Coach Rosalind Chou. "They all showed up with so much heart and intensity and dominated defensively. They have left quite a legacy."
AIC, which lost to Army 15-5 in the semis, took 3rd. The YellowJackets beat Penn State with tries from Ro'Elenoa Lagilagi, Talimaia Fuala'au, Naomi Dodd, and Morgan Schechter. That staked them to a 22-14 victory. But perhaps the most notable win for them was a 31-14 dismissal of Wheeling in the quarterfinals. AIC also finished the tournament with the most points scored, with 111. Brown had the best defense, allowing just 21 points over the four games.
Queens took 5th over Wheeling, and West Chester. Overall this bracket was dominated by NIRA teams.
In the Women's D1 Club bracket, new NCR team Northeastern (joined this year) defeated Howard, Notre Dame, Northern Iowa, and Iowa (in a tight one 15-12) to win. Iowa had an impressive showing of its own, beating Baylor, Florida State, and Purdue on their way to the final. Purdue took third.
Not really a surprise, given their 20-15 loss to Northeastern, Notre Dame rebounded nicely to win 5th, edging Florida State thanks to successful conversions, 14-10. Boise State took 9th.
Coast Guard defeated Roger Williams to take the Women's DII CRC title, with Marist 3rd, Coastal Carolina 5th, and Wisconsin Eau-Claire rebounded from a bit of an upset loss to New Mexico State to roll through the 1st-round-losing consolation bracket to take 9th.
Endicott impressed in the DIII championship, beating Middlebury, Colorado School of Mines, Drury in a close one, and Baldwin-Wallce in fairly dominant fashion in the final 32-0. Baldwin Wallace had had to fight for it at every round and perhaps the final was just a bit too much. East Stroudsburg took 3rd, Mines 5th, and Gannon 9th.
Next up in women's collegiate 7s is the CRAA tournament May 2-3. The Premier bracket will feature D1A and NIRA teams, with Penn State, Army, and Navy all doubling up and playing in both.
