HS Games Around the Nation

Here's a quick look at some of the HS action this weekend.

Cross-Border

We already touched on Pendleton's win over St. Ignatius here: Pendleton Defeats St. Ignatius in Cross-Border Battle

But St. Ignatius also had their other varsity side beat Notre Dame de la Salette 31-21. The difference between those two teams? Well maybe one was their precision in their short yardage attack. Close to the tryline, Ignatius Varsity Blue executed. Their Varsity Gold did not.

Gonzaga won comfortable over the Raleigh Redhawks 61-7. It was, said Head Coach Peter Baggetta, a good overall team performance for a side that is pretty comfortable with where they are right now (ranked #1).

Berks led Aspetuck 12-7 at halftime but a 21-point surge by Aspetuck put them ahead and they made that lead stand up, punishing Berks mistakes and tackling hard.  Aspetuck won 40-19.

Fairfield Prep shut out Morris 57-0. Rob Murphy scored 18 points on two tries and four conversions, while Anthony Dorsi and Rob Murphy also picked up a brace. More on this here: Statement Shutout Win for Fairfield Prep

Colorado

Valor Christian opened their season with a 38-19 win over the Parker Titans. Nico Zaharas had an excellent showing at No. 8while flyhalf Zach Maughn, lock Elliot Smyth, and fullback Zack Pickett all had solid games in a good team effort.

This was a really strong showing from Valor.

Regis Jesuit defeated Boulder 48-22 behind a strong performance from center Ryan Paul. Flyhalf Deagan Sarty has been putting players into space nicely and first-year player Kai Shelton was a force at No. 8.

New York

Rye defeated Georgetown Prep 13-0 in very wet conditions. The game was delayed an hour for lightning, but even when the lightning left the rain kept coming.

NorCal

Marin edged #4 HS Club Granite Bay 8-7. in what was clearly a defensive game. There was no scoring until well into the second half, when Marin loosehead prop Jackson Fienberg broke through from 20 meters out to score under the posts. The conversion, however, was blocked. Marin added a penalty and held on 8-0 until the final five minutes when Grante Bay scored a long-range try around the weak side. It wasn't enough.

Florida

Okapi defeated Tanpa 27-7, running out to a 15-0 lead and hanging on from there. Tampa will take some solace from a 7-5 second half that showed that they could be a problem for Okapi later. Okapi is now 4-0 while Tampa slips to 3-1.

Utah

Herriman started their league season with a 40-19 win over a physical West Valley Warriors side. Herriman did lead 40-5 at one point behind three tries from Freddie Ta'ai.

Good news for Herriman was also that Rylan Southwick, who had suffered a very worrying next injury at the Puriri Memorial, was able to attend the game, walking out to greet his teammates.
