Girls High School Top 20 - March 12, 2015

Danville and Pleasanton take down Sacramento. (Photo: Jackie Finlan)

The previous two weeks have been both thrilling and anti-climactic, depending on the weather conditions, but enough action occurred to move the Girls High School Top 20 around.

Inarguably the biggest news has circulated around Sacramento. Two weekends ago, the Zons surprised in a 24-12 loss to Pleasanton (read more), but then last Saturday’s 64-12 defeat to a very tough Danville piqued attention further. Still, Amazons coach Sefesi Green showed little concern.

“We had some players out the past couple weeks with injuries, so we definitely got the chance to work on depth,” Green reflected on the losses. “Both Danville and Pleasanton are playing very well. Danville is looking loaded and are the team to beat. We're not too worried. We just have to keep working hard and get better for when we see them again. NorCal will be great prep for all three teams heading to nationals.”

Worried or not, Sacramento had to take a hit in the rankings, although we suspect that they will rebound in the playoffs.

This weekend should hold some drama as well, when Danville and Pleasanton head south to the Fullerton tournament (check out our eProgram) and take on teams like Fallbrook and Canadian power Abbotsford, among others. Southern California has been relatively quiet the previous two weeks, especially with the cancellation of the high school bracket of the Champagne Classic. The Warriors kept busy with a prom dress friendly, while ICEF’s non-league against Desert Sands fell through. ICEF will get a good test out of South Bay this Saturday.

Weather also cancelled the highly anticipated Frostbite tournament, and all of those good Mid-Atlantic teams saw their seasons delay. North Bay plays a friendly against West Carroll this weekend, while top Pennsylvania sides Doylestown and Downingtown play State College and Penn Legacy, respectively, on March 22. Morris – which is sending four players with Atlantis to the Atlanta 7s Festival – waits until the end of the month before a double-header against Berkshire United and Play Rugby USA.

Nash Bash just managed to escape weather closure, as some quick action from tournament director Chris Gower saw the two-day event realized. Maryville unfortunately withdrew, no thanks to weather issues, but Ohio power St. Joseph’s Academy did not, and the team’s 3-0 shutout performance (Storm, North Penn, Chiefs) was enough for the leap over the Tennessee side. Much of the Midwest will remain quiet until April 12 for a pre-season tournament in Rockford, Ill.

In the western half of the country, Kent banked two big wins against Budd Bay and Beaverton (Ore.) in a friendly. HS All American Emily Prentice scored four tries in the Krusaders’ opener, and last weekend’s victory saw eight tries all converted. In Oregon, Grant downed Columbia County 45-10, but there were some other big scores, too, so we’ll keep an eye on that league. In Utah, Orem blanked Snow Canyon 69-0, and even though it’s early in the season, the team should consider 15s nationals in mid-May. The Vipers will take to the field this weekend against Kau Toa.
