Friday Picks Squad for HK, Singapore

In keeping with his desire to manage players, USA Men's 7s Coach Mike Friday has named a slightly changed squad to compete in the Hong Kong Sevens and Singapore Sevens in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Zack Test (Peninsula Green, Oregon and Loughborough), is back after dealing with an injury. Carlin Isles returns after finishing 5th in the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships 60 meters, and Maka Unufe (United HS) also returned after injury.

Those moves gave Friday some tough decisions to make on who he should leave home. Martin Iosefo made the Dream Team in Vancouver, so he's back. Garrett Bender and Ben Pinkelman were very solid in Vancouver and they return. Thretton Palamo, Ben Leatigaga, Sethl Halliman, and Patrick Blair do not make the trip.

One new face, who is an old face, is Peter Tiberio (Arizona) who returns to the USA team after a long hiatus. The speedy halfback/wing brings a different look to the USA team - a little more pace and shiftiness, and a little less bulk.

"'Tibs' has been training exceptionally well and continued that form following his impressive showing at the LVI," Friday told USARugby. "The added strength that 'Tibs' has is his versatility; whilst he can play at nine or 10, he is equally comfortable at center or hooker and has the skill sets to fit in at any of these positions. We are excited to see how he progresses as he is now fully fit and injury-free having been in the residency program these last four months."

No Nate Ebner? No, not yet. But he will be in Hong Kong to play with Samurai in the Hong Kong 10s, a tournament that has been the showcase for many a top rugby player. We'll keep an eye on him. We asked Friday how Ebner was doing, he said it was too early to tell, but this week, added:

"Nate has adapted well and has surprised us all with how well he is starting to pick things up," Friday said. "He still has a number of areas which are very much work-in-progress, and part of that learning process he will only get from playing competitive rugby games. The Hong Kong 10s provides a great opportunity to reintegrate Nate back into the game in a highly-competitive tournament, and playing with the most well-known international invitational team, Samurai International. Nate will be part of a squad with players who have represented their respective countries on the circuit this year."

The Hong Kong 7s will run April 8-10 local time.
