Four Wins in Two Days for USA Age-Grade Men's Teams
The last 36 hours saw the USA age-grade teams win four games by a total score of 210-33.
The USA U23s beat Boland Academy 57-26 on Tuesday in a game in which the Americans’ power in contact told the story.
Boland struggled to contain the USA U23 maul, and as a result, any penalties inside the hosts’ half were trouble.
The U23s scored several tries off the lineout-and-drive, and the strong work among the power guys eventually opened it up out wide.
The USA U19s opened up their RAN U19 championships with two shutout wins. The USA beat Trinidad & Tobago 59-0. They were able to open it up early, using powerful outside center Mosese Luveitasau to bust through off set piece. The Southern Virginia standout scored on a play off a lineout and a play off a scrum, and tacklers struggled to contain him.
On the front foot the USA rolled against a T&T team that had speed but couldn’t match the USA’s side.
In the second game of the day, the USA played one of their more imposing opponents in Jamaica.
They scored well-taken tries on either wing, and then co-captain Papa Matelau stormed through five tacklers to score near the posts, setting up a 17-0 halftime lead.
In the second half the USA was a very good 90-meter team, but finishing fell apart a couple of times. The USA U19 maul was stopped, or potentially collapses, by Jamaica, so they had to figure out other options. But some frantic passing and, at one time, being a bit slow to catch a breakaway undercut their try-scoring chances.
In the end they did score two, with the forwards crashing over, to win the game 31-0. For the USA U19s Lyndon Bailey was solid in the second row and Jayden Williams got a ton of work done at flanker.
So that puts the USA at 2-0 with Mexico and Cayman Islands on the slate on Thursday.
The top two teams will face off on Saturday in the final.

The USA U18s won quite comfortably over the West Buenos Aires Academy 63-7. The big issue for the Americans in their opening game was defense, as they gave up 40 points (and still won). Now having scored 134 points in two matches it’s pretty clear they can put tries on the board.
Head Coach Dom Wareing shook up the lineup somewhat and it worked.
July 9 is Argentina’s Independence Day and there was a large, boisterous crowd there for the game. West Buenos Aires played a similar style to that of Rosario Academy from a few days ago—skillful, testing the USA out wide, strong interior carriers, and kicking skills.
But the USA defense really improved.
“We challenged the whole squad to step up and rise in every area of the game,” Wareing told GRR. Some players got extended playing time and performance well, including fullback Jasiah Lolesio-Pua and Beppe Boglione.
“We’re improving in every area of the game but our biggest strides were on the defensive side of the ball,” said Wareing. “Holding a good team, like the one we played today, to one one score was a good achievement.”
