Fallbrook Trophy Case Crowded

Action from the Fullerton Tournament, where Fallbrook emerged winners.

Fallbrook has claimed three trophies so far this season, taking their rivalry shield from Torrey Pines (twice), the SoCal Varsity Red championship, and, this past Sunday, the Fullerton International Tournament.

There’s still rugby to be played, of course, but the Fallbrook boys have performed admirably so far.

“Their rugby IQ is so high and their retention is so good that they can adjust pretty well to any opponent,” said Coach Mike Majewski, who watched his squad beat the very strong an Diego Young Aztecs 15-10 in overtime on Sunday. “Playing in that tournament, we knew nutrition was going to be huge. This is our forth year playing here and we’ve learned a lot about getting to that 5th game.”

In their first Fullerton event, Fallbrook didn’t even finish, Majewski called the effort “a flop.” In the second year, they did a little better, and last year made the final.

“We had tough games. Santa Monica is always a tough opponent, and we knew South Bay would be a black and blue test,” said Majewski. “Pleasanton is one of those strong Northern California teams. All of those games were hard.”

Then they beat Mother Lode to reach the final against the Young Aztecs.

“The thing about the game was that the sportsmanship was just top-shelf,” said Majewski. “The weather was hot but the temperament of the players was cool.”

Fallbrook stayed cool, and with HS All American Steven Branham playing his usual good game, they prevailed.

“That was going to be our leg up on everyone else - playing smart and having the right nutrition,” said Majewski.

Six Fallbrook players made the Fullerton All-Tournament team:

One more championship remains for Fallbrook, as they start on their South Gold Club season in Southern California. It’s a challenging, but short season as they take on Back Bay on Saturday, the San Diego Mustangs a week later, and then the Young Aztecs the same weekend they host a New Zealand school team. It will be a tough ask for them to win a club title without adding any players from their single-school season, but that’s what they’re looking to do.
