Day One at RugbyTown7s Done

The Serevi Selects, Denver All-Stars, Upright Rugby Rogues, and US Army lead their respective pools after Day One's action in the Men's bracket of the Serevi RugbyTown 7s.

The US Army, led by recent West Point grads Will Holder and Ben Leatigaga, and with former West Point All Ameircan Andy Locke, and a group of talented young officers and enlisted men, slammed the Marines, edged a tough Navy side, and put Coast Guard to the sword to go 3-0. Right behind them is the US Air Force, at 2-0-1. Navy, having lost a close one to Army and tied Air Force, are unlucky to be just 1-2-1.

“I thought our performance was pretty solid. We’re working on cleaning up our unforced errors. We have a lot of room to find our potential and that’s what we’ll be working on Saturday,” Air Force head coach Andy McQuade said. “This is exactly where we wanted to be wrapping up Day 1 and we’re happy to be where we are.”

In Pool B, the Upright Rugby Rogues out of Ontario went 2-0, just getting by the Glendale Raptors 28-21 and also defeating Bermuda. Stars Rugby 7s remain on their docket. The Starts, like Glendale, are 1-1.

In Pool C the Denver 7s looked like the side to beat, opening their tournament with a 32-5 win over the Mexico Serpientes National Team and a more closely contested 21-17 victory over the Northeast Academy. Northeast, led in part by Arkansas State spark plug Dylen Carrion, and Atlantis enter Saturday tied at 1-1.

The Serevi Selects side leads Pool D after the first day, with two wins and six points to its name. The Serevi team is very experienced and could well win it all. The Collegiate All-Americans started well with a 38-0 defeat of Barbados, highlighted by a brilliant bread and offoad from Cal's Jake Anderson to Navy's Jack McAuliffe. Ian Luciano, Alex Faison-Donohoe, and Cooper Maloney all scored tries, and Kutztown's Wes Hartmann scored two. But in their second game, the All Americans were shocked by a very tight and physical Negro Y Azul out of Texas. The Texans won 33-7 and since they lost to Serevi by only a try at 26-19, they could well be a team to watch on Saturday.

The All Americans still have the Serevi Selects to face.
