Connecticut Sweeps Boys NE RCT

The Northeast RCT wrapped up last weekend in Springfield, MA with Connecticut taking the Boys Tier 1 title.

The tournament was not heavily attended and even the host team, Massachusetts, struggled, with numbers.

Connecticut started strong on Saturday, beating Western NY 77-0, and WNY also struggled (although not as much) against Pennsylvania.

That set up a clash between Connecticut and Pennsylvania, and in a back-and-forth game, Rugby PA scored with no time left, kicking the conversion to win 12-10.

In Tier 2, Rugby PA vs Connecticut was also the closest game. This time, it was the opener, and Connecticut won by 10.

Both Pennsylvania and Connecticut beat Massachusetts, as well.

On the next day, it was clear that there was a big gap between the top two teams and the rest. It was agreed that WNY would play a full game, one half against Rugby PA and one against Connecticut. But that didn't work out as after losing to Pensylvania, Western New York did not have enough players to continue. As a result, Connecticut's only game in Tier 1 on the day would be a rematch with Pennsylvania.

In Tier 2, Connecticut and Pennsylvania played a second time, and Rugby CT won again, and then beat a combined Massachusetts/Rugby PA side 19-17 to sweep the tournament.

In the Tier 1 final was an excellent game. While Connecticut was missing some starters from the day before, but was able to see players such as hooker Joseph Coscia, flyhalf Pearson Hill, flanker Mike Monaco, and prop Matthew Wiener, all from Aspetuck, move up and bolster the Tier 1 side.

These players all contributed to a 26-12 victory for Connecticut.

Overall, a strong showing from the Nutmeg State, but a real concern when it comes to RCTs that only six teams were in attendance. There was another Northeast regional tournament held earlier in June that Met NY, New Jersey, and, believe it or not, Colorado, competed in.
