College 7s Update

Among the college 7s tournament winners this weekend:

Wisconsin defeated Michigan 38-17 to win the Big 10. South Carolina showed off some of their best 7s of the spring and beat Tennessee 21-7 in the final of the SCRC.

West Virginia won the 3rd Keystone 7s tournament of the season, but Temple took home the series 53 points to WVU's 50. So Temple qualifies for USA Rugby nationals, but Temple is also a CRC team, so they might not go. WVU has already qualified for nationals, having won the Big XII qualifier.

In a hugely-competitive Mid-American Conference 7s, Bowling Green emerged winners in the final over Cincinnati in a tournament where six teams ended pool play 2-1.

It was a weird situation in the Empire 7s Series. Colgate led relatively comfortably, having won the Empire half of their two tournaments (non-Empire teams enter also and then the winners of each bracket play in the final). But Colgate had long ago stated they could not make this weekend's 3rd tournament. So Fordham ended up winning the Empire side of the bracket, and Stony Brook took 2nd in the tournament (while Syracuse took 2nd overall, Colgate 3rd and Stony Brook 4th). As a result, Fordham, who lost to Kutztown in the final, has won the Empire series and will go to nationals.

In the two-day SIRC tournament, Kennesaw State defeated South Florida in the final to take the tournament.

In the ACRL 7s in Greenville, NC, Boston College, an ACC school that hasn't been playing in the ACRL 15s league due to distance, ran the table against some impressive opposition. BC beat Clemson twice, as well as Virginia Tech, and defeated Maryland in the final 21-17.

In the Heart of America tournament, University of Arkansas beat Kansas State University to win the qualifier for the 3rd year in a row

So this is the list of teams who have qualified for the Men's 7s Nationals, and we are pretty sure are going:

Central Washington, West Virginia, St. Bonaventure, AIC, Bowling Green, Fordham, Temple, South Carolina, Kennesaw State, Arkansas

Teams who won qualifiers and we think will be going to the CRC only:

Cal, Boston College, Wisconsin,

Teams we think should or will get an at-large bid:

St. Mary's, Lindenwood, Notre Dame College, Tennessee, Arizona State, New England College, Western Michigan, James Madison, Davenport, Maryland, Colgate, Delaware

Teams that look in good shape to qualify or get an at-large, or teams who might surprise us as double-up on CRC and USA Rugby tournaments:

Houston, Texas Tech, Kutztown, one or two from the Pac West, an Ivy League team other than Dartmouth, Colorado or Colorado State or Air Force

In DII, Minnesota-Duluth won the Fool's Fest Winona State University, and will go to Cary. In the Southern Conference 7s finals, UNC-Charlotte and Coastal Carolina went 3-0 on Day One. But this was a two-day tournament, and in the semis both of those teams were overcome by the teams that finished 2nd in the opposite pool. UNC-C lost to The Citadel, and Coastal lost to UNC-Wilmington. The Citadel went on to beat Wilmington to earn a spot in the USA Rugby finals.

And in the MARC tournament, Rowan defeated Drexel 28-5 in the final. York lost a close semi to Rowan before taking 3rd.

Men's DII teams that have qualified:

UW-Whitewater, UM-Duluth, Tulane, St. Louis, Niagara, The Citadel, Rowan

Men's DII teams that might be worth an at-large look:

UNC-Wilmington, Lindenwood-Belleville, SUNY Oswego, Principia, Drexel, York

Qualifier Tournaments to come:
