Aviators Krueger, Rodriguez Just Happy To Be Out There At World 10s

An All American at Lindenwood, Cristian Rodriguez is now a Dallas Jackal.

Training for the World Tens Series has been a bit of a culture shock for some of the Ohio Aviators players, maybe all of them.

After months of shutdowns, no rugby, no going out, no gathering, they're in training, mopeding around Bermuda, and going to the beach. OK, so training is more prominent than the beachgoing, but you get the idea. They are back playing, and moving around, and they appreciate it.

The Aviators has eight capped Eagles and a diverse group of players drawn mostly from Major League Rugby ranks ready to compete in a seven-team tournament starting this weekend. Among the players are recent college MLR signings Cristian Rodriguez out of Lindenwood and Spencer Krueger out of Ohio State.

"We spent some time getting to know each other and kind of easing into it," said Rodriguez, who has been a hugely effective 7s player as well as 15s. "It's been good, outside of rumors about the hurricane."

Oh yes, there's a hurricane coming, and while it's not the strongest anyone has ever seen, it's still coming, and the Series openers have been delayed a day as a result.

Still the players have been able to enjoy the location.

"Hey, we're in Bermuda; we can't really complain," said Rodriguez. "We've had one or two days off and it's been nice to get on the scooters and get to the beach. Coming from California where we've been pretty locked down, it's been great"

Krueger said he, too, has been itching for a little more freedom of movement, and he also acknowledged that there's been a little sizing up of the opposition as they pass each other in the hotel. They can relax a little but there's a job to do, as well.

"I've played some 7s but 10s is something I've never played before," he said. "So I am learning and it's an adjustment, but I think I'll be more of a front-row player instead of like in 7s when you're a little bit of everything."

Rodriguez has played a lot of 7s, helping Lindenwood to multiple major championships, but still 10s is a different animal.

"It am getting used to it," he said. "It's my first time getting and I am getting used to what my roles will be. Is it 7s where you get to every ruck, or more like 15s where you remain a pivot" That's mainly it—figuring out where you're supposed to be."

The fitness in 10s is also a hybrid. You ned to that race-to-the-finish-line sprint fitness of 7s, but also need to pace yourself as the games are a bit longer.

"There's more running than in 15s; it's sort of a happy medium I think," said Krueger. "I am just excited to get out there again. It's been a while for everybody."
