Anderson - Cal Win All About the Team

Cal may not have been perfect, but they battled enough and got a couple of special plays to emerge CRC winners for the third time in a row.

Captain Jake Anderson provided the winning moment, cutting through the Kutztown defense to score the winner in overtime, but it was Anderson, speaking with Goff Rugby Report, who also saw the problems.

"Our basic skills let us down," Anderson told Goff Rugby Report. "We lost the ball. We made inadvisable offloads. Kutztown are a good team and they punished us for it."

But when Cal was more careful and less frantic, they unleashed some pretty good skills of their own. Like many teams at the higher end of the CRC, their passes hit the catcher when he was in full flight. Cal was consistently good at this. Still, they needed some special moments. One of them was Anthony Salaber, a rock in the contact area and on defense, Salaber broke through for the game-tying try in the first half that was critical.

"He made a great play," said Anderson. "He's been great for us all weekend and that's the sort of thing that happens - players need to make the play when it's there. For me, at center, I wanted to create something for my teammates."

Anderson did so for a near-try for Andrew Battaglia, and then an actual try for the wing. Then, in overtime, it was again about being patient and letting the game come their way. They lost the toss and the kickoff, but smart defense got them a penalty, and the ball.

"We wanted to win the kickoff, but we didn't, so we knew we had to be patient and just keep playing defense," said Anderson. "And then we had a chance. I was able to see the gap and make the play, but it could have been any one of us. What matters is we worked together to get that try."
