All-Time American List: Ed "Mush" Graff

The 1924 USA Olympic rugby team. Ed Graff is in the second row, far left.

Ed "Mush" Graff was a Cal rugby player in the early part of the 20th Century.

He was highly respected as a leader and motivator as well as hooker on the field and he was part of the Gold Medal-winning USA team in 1924. With a head like a cinder block and a mean "I dare-ya" stare, Graff was a key figure in the USA's very aggressive and physical style of play that saw them defeat France for the Olympic title.

Graff was a superb player but he was also influential in other ways, reviving the Cal rugby program and coaching it in the 1930s, as well as helping form the Northern California Rugby Football Union and coaching the Olympic Club team.
