Kings Point, Stony Brook Dominate in Empire

Stony Brook and Kings Point are on a collision course as both won big this weekend in Empire Conference play.

Led by two tries from Josh Raines and tries from Tim Llull and Steve McQuire, Kings Point shut out Syracuse 24-0. It was a very rainy and wet day through much of the Northeast, which kept some scores low. But the Merchant Marine Academy did enough, shutting out a struggling Syracuse squad to go 4-0.

Also 4-0 is Stony Brook after a 45-17 defeat of Brockport. Phil Salter scored three tries for the Seawolves and redoubtable prop Jimmy Sheridan as well as Bryan Michel also touched down.

Salter said scoring three tries was all part of the team approach.

“One of the tries we won a scrum, I got the ball, made a move, and went over, but really they are all kind of a blur,” he said “What matters is that we put in a team effort and scoring the tries got us closer to a good victory.”

Salter said Stony Brook has been pleased with their results, but not necessarily with their performances.

“I think we can play much better,” he told Goff Rugby Report. “Each week we get a little better. We start to correct the mistakes we make. We can do more of that. I think we scrummed really well and we’ve got a good chemistry on the team.”

What is perhaps a cause for mild concern was that Brockport, down 38-5 they scored two late tries to make a bit more of a game of it. Salter said his team noticed.

“We talk a lot about needing to finish games, and I don’t think we did that,” he said. “But we’re looking forward to next week.”

That would be when Kings Point and Stony Brook face off in what is essentially the match for first in the Empire Conference.

Standings do not include Colgate v Fordham result.
