Aztecs Take CSU 7s

San Diego State defeated Sacramento State 28-12 in the final of the California State University 7s this past weekend in Sacramento.

Led by the strong play of Kalei Konrad and with Austin Switzer, and Trev Christiansen making key contributions, the Aztecs were the class of a competitive field, and Head Coach Alex Lichtig was gratified with the performance.

“It was a testament to the hard work the players have put in over the last few weeks,” said Lichtig. “Our 7s side has made some great improvements this year under our 7s specialist Ian Denham, who has given the players every opportunity to continually improve. It's a great achievement for the team to win a tournament.  We will celebrate this win then quickly turn our focus to the upcoming West Coast 7s tournament which will host a highly competitive field.”

The CSU 7s is the start of a busy fall of college 7s tournaments along the West Coast, with the Viking 7s at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash. coming up next. The teams in the Pacific Northwest will face off again in one of two tournaments October 4 (Boise ad Corvallis), and one more on October 11 (the Palouse 7s at Washington State University) before their championship tournament October 18.

Meanwhile, the West Coast 7s in San Luis Obispo will be a challenging event, and that will be followed by the impressive Battle in the Bay October 27. That same weekend, the Rocky Mountain colleges are scheduled to play in Fort Collins.

November 1 sees the Pac 12 teams clash in the PAC 7s at UCLA. November 15 is the Pac West 7s.
