GRR: Navy
The Varsity Cup's 1st Round kicks off this weekend and in recent years we've seen a few surprises in this round.
While most would think that Cal and Central Washington are heavily favored to make the final (both teams get a bye this weekend), that doesn't mean all of the other games are foregone conclusions.
Here's what we think (Goff Rugby Report rankings in parentheses):
Two late tries from freshman Bailey Abercombie sparked Wast Point in a comeback victory over arch rivals Navy at Army’s Anderson Rugby Complex Saturday.
There’s nothing like a traditional rivalry, and few rivalries in college rugby quite like West Point versus the US Naval Academy.
Th US Naval Academy put in one of their best defensive efforts Saturday and seem to have turned the corner as they shut out Dartmouth 29-0.
After giving up 151 points in three straight games either side of the Winter Break, Navy held Clemson to ten points on February 19 and now have a shutout to point to.
The US Naval Academy's Varsity Cup buildup got a nice shot in the arm with two wins over the weekend.
Navy took on the Glendale men's club, and won 40-17.
It was what Head Coach Mike Flanagan called "a really good defensive effort coming off a hard, focused week."
