Jesuit Beats Tourists

Playing on Senior Day, the Jesuit High School rugby team played their final spring match before they start their playoff run. The first ten minutes was all St. Pats, with Jesuit committing a mistake every minute. The visitors were able to score first just five minutes into the match.

It took a bit for the home side to get going, but once they did they didn’t look back. Senior Center John O’Brien, who continues to put in massive shifts on defense, crossed the line first. Five minutes later, Flanker Max Sackett punched one over. This was followed by a try from Fullback Mason Phillips after a very deft kick from flyhalf Max Schumacher. Phillips converted to take the lead to twelve points. Prop Joe Marchant then carried several Australians over the line. Laiatu Latu used every inch of his frame to dot down and Phillips converted to stretch the lead.

Halftime: Jesuit 29 – St. Patrick’s 5

Scrumhalf Elias Ramirez, back from a long injury layoff, found a gap to score with a quick tap. Phillips hit another conversion. Phillips hit a penalty to end the Jesuit scoring. The visitors continued to fight back and were able to cross the line three times, but it was Jesuit’s day.

Final: Jesuit 39 – St. Patrick’s 22

“Once we started going through the phases and making the visitors defend the entire field, the gaps opened and we exploited them,” said Head Coach John Shorey. “It was good day to honor our seniors and take a big step toward our playoff run.”

Jesuit will host San Francisco Golden Gate in the Nor Cal playoff game. The game will start at 11:30 at Jesuit High School on Saturday
