Young: Test Schedule Crucial To USAR Future

USA Rugby is in a difficult spot coming out of this year's bankruptcy, as cash flow from sources other thank World Rugby are slow in awakening.

Sponsorship deals are soon to expire, and as USA Rugby CEO Ross Young said, despite the supportiveness of major sponsors EY and UL, he doesn't anticipate the corporate sponsorship picture getting any rosier.

So membership dues are crucial and Young also had his say about that, asking those who normally sign up with USA Rugby in the fall to do so now even if they're not playing, if only to be a member and help out the organization.

World Rugby finances are keeping the organizing going, but as time goes on, what USA Rugby needs, said Young, is help formalizing a test match schedule. Young confirmed that England (Men's 15s) will likely play the USA in 2021, and he also said that plans cotninue to go ahead for a Top 4 competition between the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in the women's game.

But all of that is all so much sand blowing in the wind unless it is backed up every year. Young said a consistent schedule that the Eagles can expect to play every year, and some understanding that releasing players in February and March for international duty isn't really helpful—they'd rather get August—would allow USA Rugby to get better value out of events, broadcast rights, and planning.
