Xavier HS followed up on a decent showing against Fort Hunt (a 5-5 tie) with a 55-19 defeat of Doylestown Sunday evening.

Out of Pennsylvania, Doylestown has been struggling in the early going in part due to player availability as other sports finish up in the winter, but the result is also a sign that the New York-based Xavier is looking better than initial prognostications indicated.

Xavier's new pitch at Aviator Field is 70 meters wide, and so lends itself to a more wide up game.

"I was interested to see how we could move the ball wide and use the width of the field against our opponents," said Xavier Head Coach Greg Norris. "I was pleased that we were able to do so, with our winger Alex Jebaily going over four times. This was the result of good finishing in some cases as well as good footwork by the winger. The reason for the tries is more a result of good structure and system. From that perspective I was happy. The cleanliness of that system is what we must work on going forward."

The forwards didn't do too badly, either, with tighthead prop Milton Guzman scoring three times. A strong runner with good skill and athleticism, Guzman has developed quickly into a player who is beginning to understand the game. And at 6-0, 245, the junior packs a punch.

"We made a number of changes at the half and our concentration started to wain," added Norris. "We let through three tries through poor defense and we battled to contain their flyhalf. This is trademark of Doylestown rugby, who tend to produce good running 10s who know when to attack the gain line and always have a turn of pace."

Doylestown's regular flyhalf, Mike Weir, is out injured, and with much of the team's pack just coming off the wrestling season, the team still has more to do. Even so, late in the game, the Doylestown backline was able to speed through for some tries.

But at the same time, the New Yorkers are working their system, and will be a national contender for sure this year.
