Woodlands Youth Win Third Tournament In A Row

The Woodlands Boys HS team won the Boy's High School Elite Division at Bloodfest in the Austin, TX area over the weekend; the win was notable in part because Woodlands was the only non-select-side in the bracket, and took home the trophy regardless.

This follows on the Woodlands sweeping two previous 7s tournaments, making this the third tournament win this summer.

In Bloodfest (so named because it is associated with a blood drive),Woodlands actually lost a game in pool play, the first loss of the 7s season.

Woodlands shut out Gorilla Rugby 26-0 and edged Rock Rugby Elite 10-7. But they fell 14-7 to Rebel Rugby Academy to finish 2nd in the Pool B.

In Pool A, Stars came out the strongest in a group that included Oklahoma Selects, Rock Rugby Academy, and Falcons Rugby.

In Sunday's quarterfinals, Woodlands beat Gorilla, and then in the semis garnered revenge over Rebel Rugby 10-0.

Stars made it to the final, where Woodlands dispatched them 22-7 in probably their best performance of the weekend.

Senior Orrin Bizer scored seven tries, including three in the championship match, and he added five conversions for 45 points on the weekend.

Sophomore Mattox King added three tries, while Dillan Page, Lane O'Brien, Landon Smith, and Colten Windsor all scored once.

The lineup included five sophomores (King, O'Brien, Page,Connor Devos, and Alden King), and three Freshmen in Dylon DeAngelo, Joe Golden (who scored two tries), and Ben Urbanovsky (who added two conversions).

Also key to the team's success were senior Will Honderich, junior Cam Markle, and junior Dylan Flynn.

Woodlands Rugby also won the South Houston High School Summer 7s on June 15, beating Lamar, West Houston, and Brazoria. And before that they took the Lone Star 7s over Cristo Rey, Plano, Alliance, and Allen HS. Along with the players above, Manuel Zapata-Sanchez, Parker Calllegari, and Jacoby Davila helped Woodlands to wins in these tournaments.
