Wild Weekend in Rugby East

Well, well, well, the Rugby East continues to surprise.

Going into this weekend.Kutztown was 0-4 and Army was 2-1-1; Kutztown won.

Going into this weekend St. Bonaventure was 3-1 and Mount St. Mary's 2-1 but barely, and yet the Mount won ... quite convincingly.

It's shakeup time.

So St. Bonaventure came in after a tough but well-played loss to Navy last week perhaps thinking they could open it up against a somewhat undisciplined Mount side. MSM had lost last week to Mary Washington and did so in part because they lacked discipline and didn't play smart in key areas of the field.

Well it was different this weekend. The Mount's defense was patient and smart and their kicking game put them in the right areas of the field. St. Bonaventure played looser with the ball than they normally do, trying some speculative offloads that led to turnovers. As a result, the Mount took an early lead and held it.

And then in the second half when scrumhalf Matheo Lorenzato received a red card for a very ill-advised action, Bonnies was chasing the game.

Mary Washington beat Penn State 20-15 in a tense encounter, taking the Sheehy Cup and improving now to 3-1.

Penn State scored early for a 5-0 lead. UMW answered quickly with a penalty from center Seb Schefermann. A big run from center William Lindsey then got Mary Washington close and prop Cam Giwa-McNeil thundered over to make it 10-5.

Just before halftime flyhalf Cale White broke free with a nifty sidestep and he went 60 meters before offloading to 6-7 wing Yann Aubert to touch down.

Right after halftime Penn State inched closer with a penalty, after a long, long period in UMW territory. After a barrage of kicks between both teams and many meters made Penn State evened the score with another try.

UMW thought they had regained the lead twice, but the referee called both scores back. Finally, however, the pressure told as UMW captain Nick Ball carried the ball off the back of a 5-meter scrum for the final try of the game, and Ball's last try at home.

The last five minutes was spent by UMW trudging the ball forward and burning clock in the process. As time expired scrumhalf Kit Waddington pulled the ball from the base of the scrum and sent it to Cale White to kick it out and end the game.

Meanwhile Army is not having a dominant season this year but were certainly favored over Kutztown this weekend. The Bears has lost four in a row in conference play, 44-22 to St. Bonaventure, 16-15 to Mount St. Mary's, 55-15 to Navy, and 19-7 to Notre Dame College last week. This week, however, they had other ideas in facing the Black Knights.

In a tight, defensive game Kutztown led 10-7 at halftime. But in the second half the Bears took control to win it 27-7.

There were a couple of results that went as expected. Notre Dame College continued their strong run of form with a 78-7 defeat of Southern Virginia. Life handed a hard-nosed Queens team a 63-10 on the backs of a very aggressive and fast-moving second half.

So what does this mean? Notre Dame College inches closer to St. Bonaventure in the chase to be the top NCR team out of the conference. At 3-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Rugby East North, NDC is right behind St. Bonaventure who now sit 3-1. Wouldn't it be fun if they played each other? Yes, yes they will ... November 4 at NDC.
