Westside won both the Boys and Girls brackets in Rugby Indiana's HS 7s championships over the weekend.

Held at the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Ind., the tournament capped off a four-week season in Indiana.

Girls Bracket

Westside beat Westfield 22-5, Pendleton 28-10 to set up the semifinals against Noblesville. The girls bracket had two pools of three and one pool of four, with the larger pool still having teams play just two games.

As a result, four teams—Westside, Carmel, Norblesville, and Chargers all went 2-0 in pool games. The Chargers beat Penn 47-0 and Noblesville 30-10 in pool play to set up their semifinal, which they won over Carmel 27-7.

Westside meanwhile held off Noblesville 14-7 in the other semi.

In the final, Westside, led by an MVP performance from Soryah Hart, beat Chargers by a try, 22-15.

Boys Bracket

The Black Swarm battled through a tough pool play, beating Mudsock 22-17, Brownsburg 27-12, and Chargers 27-12.

Meanwhile Zionsville just barely got by Penn 20-19, getting the four unconverted tries versus three tries for Penn. That was a key result for Zionsville and they got sufficient confidence from that to shut out Royal Irish 29-0. Another close game, 10-5 over Westfield, rounded out pool play.

That set up Zionsville vs Westside in the final. Jack Long had a big day for Westside and led the Black Swarm to a convincing 24-7 win to take the title.

Festival

In the festival brackets, Leo and Chargers went 3-0 in the Boys division, while Chargers B side and C side went 3-0 in the Girls division.

Strong Season

Rugby Indiana Executive Director Wayne Eells said this was a record growth season for Rugby Indiana.

In the championship tournament, 16 girls teams participated (including a festival bracket of six teams), and 16 boys teams participated with two pools of four and a festival of eight. This mean well over 300 athletes were in action.
