West Suburban Bulls Comes Back to Win Illinois D2

The West Suburban Bulls are 2022 Illinois D2 champions.

The West Suburban Bulls won the Rugby Illinois D2 championship earlier this month, defeating Notre Dame La Salette Academy 31-28 in dramatic fashion.

The Bulls opened the scoring first but La Salette stormed back to score three converted tries and lead 21-7 at halftime.

The second half continued in the same vein and La Salette built a 28-7 lead.

But after that the Bills started to put some things together. They put in three tries, two converted, and it was now 28-26 with time winding down.

With no time left the Bulls were able to get one more over to win it 31-28.

This is a big win for a team started 13 years ago by Larry Zeno, who had only a handful of players in the team's first season. He continued to build the club and the Bulls now compete in D2 and also in the Freshman/Sophomore competition. This is now the third state title for the Bulls.

Bulls players hail from several schools: Lyons Township, Nazareth Academy, Hinsdale South, Hinsdale Central, Riverside-Brookfield, Downers Grove North and South, and recently added players from Oak Park and River Forest. Indoor team training began in February at the Compass Arena in Westmont and then they moved to Katherine Legge Memorial Park in Hinsdale. Home matches are played at the Chicago Blaze Rugby Club in Lemont, Ill.

The Bulls continue to build.
