West DIA - Utes Win Big

Lineout time for Utah and Wyoming.

The University of Utah went to 2-0 in the West DIA with a 63-12 defeat of Wyoming.

Meanwhile, Colorado put up an impressive result over Colorado State 32-12.

The Cowboys went up 6-0 over the Utes early in the game but Caleb Meyer’s try put Utah ahead 7-6 and they didn’t look back, running in three more tries to lead 24-6. Wyoming continued to kick well, and punished Utah penalties twice more to make it 24-12, but Chad Gough, Scott Strong, and Gabe Rufflin helped lead Utah to a big second half.

“We’ve got a lot of raw pieces,” said Utah Coach John Law. “We’re using the fall to help blood some players, and we’ve got some good young talent, but talent that needs some time.”

Law said he was concerned about losing Danny Christensen and Tonata Lauti to graduation, but Saturday’s result certainly made the future look bright. Utah will also compete in the PAC Rugby Conference in the spring, and look to play both a DIA and a Varsity Cup post-season.

“It’s just good to get tough games in the fall,” he said.

Wyoming, for their part, took an inexperienced team to the game and hoped to see their play raised by skillful flyhalf Conner Rezzonico and captain and fullback Brendon Kozman. But an injury to No. 8 Tim Mendoza last week hurt them, and with two rookies in the backline it was tough sledding for the Cowboys.

The hierarchy in the West DIA is clarifying after only two weeks. Air Force is still a wild card as the Zoomies haven't played a league game yet. But Utah has beaten Wyoming, and Wyoming had already beaten New Mexico. Colorado has beaten Colorado State. So it looks as though the conference title will be contested among Colorado, Utah, and Air Force.
