Pool Play is done in the West Coast 7s, and Cal, Arizona, Arizona State, and UC Davis going 2-0 in the preliminaries.

Cal gave up one try in each of their games, defeating a solid-looking Grand Canyon team and also disposing of Santa Barbara City College.

Arizona were very strong in beating Nevada and Cal Poly, and Arizona State also looked in control over USC and San Diego State.

The big upset of the day was the last pool game of the day, with 1-0 UC Davis beating 1-0 UCLA. UCLA Head Coach Scott Stewart had given a hint that perhaps his squad might lack a bit of experience.

“If it’s there to win, yes we’re going to push to win it,” said Stewart. “But the first goal is to get some of our younger players playing.”

These include Soh Nakayama from Greenwich in Connecticut and Ryan Bradfield out of St. Edward in Ohio. Stewart said he has a lot of young talent, and needs to get them involved as quickly as possible.

So Cal will take on Davis in the semis while Arizona plays Arizona State in a classic rivalry game.
