This Weekend in HS Boys Rugby - West Coast

Here’s a quick look at Boys HS rugby along the West Coast.

It’s spring break in Oregon, so there’s only one round-robin, and that’s in the Varsity division. But there is more action elsewhere.

Rugby Washington

The upsets of last week will see the upcoming games of great importance to all. Budd Bay, now at 2-2, visits Seattle. Kent, now 2-2, plays at Eastside. And then the two leading teams, Chuckanut and Liberty, are slated to face off. This game was thought to be a game of two undefeated teams, but both lost last week, so it’s 3-1 v 3-1 at Pat Ryan Field in SeaTac.

Northern California

In the single-school division, it’s all about Jesuit as they wade through a weekend that includes Clayton Valley, De La Salle, and the Westlake school from New Zealand, and the English Lambs team, all in the space of eight days. Jesuit has been hit by injuries but are surviving. They did beat Clayton Valley 52-22 to take control of the single-school division.

In the club division (Varsity Gold), Hayward looks to keep breathing down Danville’s neck with a win over 2-2 North Day. Peninsula Green feels the same way, and faces 2-3 Pleasanton. Sacramento conference leaders Granite Bay face 3-3 Mother Lose, and Sierra Foothills, still singing from their recent loss to Granite Bay, will play Vacaville.

Southern California

Los Angeles plays Santa Clarita in a game that should be marginally easier than their recent games against Santa Monica and Belmont Shore, both of which LA won. Santa Monica (2-1) plays Pasadena (also 2-1) in a game that shows us who can stay with Los Angeles in the North Gold Conference.

In the South Gold, Fallbrook plays the San Diego Mustangs, who have struggled with numbers. Fallbrook can essentially clinch their conference with a win.

San Luis Obispo plays Arroyo Grande and should win to go 7-0.

Arizona

And finally, in Arizona, we’ve saved the best for last, as the entire league probably comes down to this game, as Red Mountain faces Scottsdale. Both teams are undefeated in league play, and the winner will be 1st in the conference.

Red Mountain is coming off a midweek clash with a well-regarded Desert Vista team. This was a ran makeup, and it was all Red Mountain as the team from Mesa won 66-7.
