Warhawks Slam Duluth, And More From Great MW

Toss Streeter photo.

Wisconsin-Whitewater reminded us all that the Warhawks are still able to fly, beating Minnesota-Duluth 57-17 and putting paid to any notions that the Bulldogs might chase the Warhawks down.

Whitewater was fairly clinical, which is especially noteworthy given how young the team is. It didn't hurt that veteran back Levi Van Lanen is still there and keeps everyone relaxed and calm and on-task.

So that, combined with the motivation of seeing FloRugby rank Duluth ahead of Whitewater, fueled a big victory. Still, Whitewater did take about 20 minutes or thereabouts to score their first try, and it was 14-5 with ten minutes to go in the first half. That's when the Warhawks answered a Duluth try with a quick strike, and then scored just before halftime to get a three-score cushion.

Duluth inched closer at 28-12 after 49 minutes, but three Whitewater tries in 12 minutes put the game away.

There's more going on in the Great Midwest than just those two teams. Illinois State moved to 3-0 in the South Division with a 28-0 defeat of Western Illinois. This was a forfeit as Western, a new team brought in when Northwest couldn't join due to on-campus issues, is struggling with numbers. But Conference officials have pointed out that Western Illinois is still making it to games and playing, just shorthanded, a sign that all they need are some additional players to start getting results.

Marquette moved to 2-0 in the North, with a very tight 10-5 win over UW-Platteville. The score was tied 5-5 going into the final ten minutes. Still it was a massive defensive effort from Marquette. Northern Michigan got its first win of the season, as did Loyola. Definitely one to watch, Loyola's opening game was a 27-22 loss to Illinois State. that culd easily be reversed if Loyola conitnues to improve.
