USMMA Rugby Seeks Assistant Coach
The United States Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, New York is currently searching for a paid assistant rugby coach.
The assistant coach would be expected to support the head coach by recruiting, reviewing film, and running at least two practices a week. Practices take place Monday – Friday from 5 PM to 7 PM, and the season runs from August to November. The more time the successful candidate is willing to commit, the more the alumni would be able to pay him or her.
USMMA Rugby, or better known as Kings Point Rugby, has been around since its inception in 1970. The school is small with a student body of only 1,000, but is no stranger to rugby success. Last year, the D3 program won its conference in 15s and made it to the regional round of the national playoffs.
This past fall, for the second year in a row, USMMA played West Point's C side. This game was a very competitive 32-29 loss and one West Point coach said that it was the best competition their C side had come against all year.
The program has a scrum sled, storage facility, fieldhouse usage, team travel vans, and a dedicated rugby field with lights.
All students at the school attend for free in exchange for a military service commitment spanning five or eight years depending on the student’s choice of active duty or reserve duty in one of the five military branches. The rugby athletes are no stranger to hard work, dedication, and service. All must take an oath when they arrive and all students are Midshipmen in the United States Naval Reserve. During their schooling, students complete a mandatory sea year program where they first spend four months at sea their sophomore year and then eight months at sea their junior year on either a military or commercial vessel. Many students have passed through warzones, and some have even been shot at by insurgent missiles.
