USA Names Squad to Face Canada

USA Head Coach Mike Tolkin has named his lineup to face Canada Monday in the final day of competition in the Pacific Nations Cup.

After losing to Samoa, beating Japan, and losing to Tonga, the USA was ranked #5 among the six teams and will play off with 0-3 Canada for 5th.

The fortunes of the two teams have been opposite of each other this season. The Eagles have started games slowly, being outscores 48-15 in the first half of the three games, combined. But in the second half the USA has outscored opponents 46-24. Canada, conversely, has opened games up 31-24, but their second half is 13-45.

In the USA team, Tolkin continues to alternate hookers, with Zach Fenoglio getting the start this time around. Most of the forward pack that beat Japan, with Eric Fry and Titi Lamositele at prop, Hayden Smith at lock, and Scott LaValla, three-try-scorer Andrew Durutalo, and Danny Barrett in the back row. The only change is that Greg Peterson goes in for Cam Dolan at lock.

In the backs, it’s again much the same, although the Eagles will be without Taku Ngwenya. Halfbacks Mike Petri and AJ MacGinty return from the Japan game, and outside center Seamus Kelly, wing Blaine Scully, and fullback and captain Chris Wyles return.

Andrew Suniula, who was solid in defense and in the few times that he got the ball against Tonga starts at inside center instead of Thretton Palamo, and Zack Test starts at left wing.

Perhaps the big selection choice of note is that big tackler John Quill does not make the starting 15.
