USA Men Take Bronze

It's Bronze for the USA Men's Rugby Team as the Eagles brushed off a heartbreaking loss to Canada in the semis and defeated Uruguay 40-12 in the 3rd/4th game in Toronto Sunday.

Perry Baker put the Eagles on the scoreboard within a minute. Uruguay kicked deep to start the game and the Eagles patiently worked the ball sideline-to-sideline to give Brett Thompson a break up the sideline. At midfield Thompson fed a trailing Baker were raced in. Madison Hughes hit the conversion for a 7-0 lead. Some nifty ball handling saw Uruguay reply, with Rodrigo Silva Pisano going in under the posts.

Sobered somewhat, the Eagles realized Uruguay wouldn't just roll over. In fact, Los Teros continued to pressure the Americans. Stuck in their own 22 for several minutes, the Eagles were a little fortunate to hold on, and finally get the ball out to Baker, who torched Uruguay for am 80-meter-try. Stephen Tomasin won the restart and took it in for a key score before halftime, and that made it 19-7 at the break.

The second half was a little stop-start at the beginning as Mike Friday tested some combinations. But finally a break from Hughes set up Tomasin for his second. Better work by the USA in the breakdown got the Eagles foing again and that led to a try for Mike Te'o. Moments later fans were treated to the sight of Garrett Bender charging down the wing for anoher try.

Uruguay finished off the game with a try, but the USA took Bronze.

It wasn't what they wanted, but the USA team was not as polished as they had been at the NACRA 7s. Many of the players learned a lot about what international rugby is like.
