USA 1-2 in Singapore - On to Bowl Bracket

The USA Men's 7s team wrapped up Saturday's pool play at the Singapore 7s with a 19-12 loss to New Zealand, which puts them into a Sunday matchup with Russia for the bowl quarterfinals.

The Eagles went into the game having beaten Canada 36-14 and then a 19-17 loss to France halted that progress. USA wasn't able to gain the same positive outcome against the All Blacks. If New Zealand had lost this game, they would have played for the bowl for the first time in history. This seemed to set more of a fire underneath New Zealand, and after losing 19-17 against France, #5 USA had to defeat #2 New Zealand for the cup quarterfinals.

All Blacks 7s' Regan Ware initiated the scoreline and lock Dylan Collier followed shortly after. With a 12-0 lead over USA, the Eagles began to lose the flow which they had previously acquired during the Canada game. Numerous penalties occurred in the matter of minutes, giving New Zealand the upper hand. After a series of beautiful offloads, All Black wing Kurt Baker touched down another, leading into the half with a score of 19-0 for New Zealand.

USA coach Mike Friday could be heard telling his team to "just calm down" during the break. However, that message registered too late for the Eagles.

Penalties still followed USA after the half, making their pace too slow to put up more points than the All Blacks.

Maka Unufe combined a big break with some masterful footwork to land the Eagles their first five points of the game. Wing Perry Baker rocketed in a questionable try, which referees deemed had touched the paint, taking those points and leaving USA to face a score of 19-7. Yet, USA wasn't done. Zach Test was able to dot one more down before New Zealand kicked it into touch for a final score of 19-12.

While the All Blacks will play South Africa tomorrow for the cup, USA will face Russia, who lost 36-17 to Scotland, in the Bowl Quarterfinals.
